Day trips from New York

This season · Fall 2026

The Hudson Valley in fall, without the crowds.

Ridges, farm stands, and small halls, plus the weekends their own operators already call busy. We keep a date only when someone printed it.

Checked Tue, Oct 20, 2026.

I LOVE NY’s report for the week of October 14–20, 2026 puts the mid-to-upper Hudson Valley at near-peak to peak, and names New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, and Cornwall among the places with the most significant change. The same report expects peak color through much of the Catskills. They define peak as the best overall appearance of the season, counting color, brilliance, and leaf drop. A new report comes out on Wednesday afternoons. This one does not describe November. I LOVE NY foliage report

Go here instead

The crowded version, then the place we would drive to instead. Times and prices are the ones on the operator’s page.

Breakneck, and Cold Spring on an October weekend

New York State Parks says that beginning April 21, 2025, Breakneck Ridge, other area trails, and the Breakneck Ridge Metro-North station close for a two-year period while the Breakneck Connector and Bridge are built. The same park page says weekends are very busy, trails can be crowded, and parking is limited. If the spaces are full, it asks you to hike somewhere else. Extra parking for Little Stony Point is at the Cold Spring train station. Extra parking for Mount Beacon is on the surrounding streets in Beacon.

Instead. Do not plan Breakneck this fall. The trail and its station are in that closure. For a ridge that is open, Mohonk Preserve is the Gunks day we would actually drive for, and the River-to-Ridge trail is the free loop from New Paltz. Mount Beacon is open, and it is also where the Highlands page sends overflow cars, so an October weekend there is not the quiet version.

Timing. Mohonk’s alerts call fall one of the busiest times. On peak foliage weekends, trailhead parking may fill quickly. They ask you to arrive early and to have a backup. Pine Road is closed for road work from October 13 until further notice, so that lot is not the backup. West Trapps and Spring Farm fill early on summer and fall weekends. The Visitor Center lot has overflow parking farther up the hill. The Ulster County Nature Bus on their page runs Saturdays from late April through the end of September, so it is not an October ride. Metro-North, on October 16, 2026, said weekend Hudson Line ridership was high — about 171,000 riders the Saturday before that note — and added six round trips each weekend between Grand Central and Beacon, stopping at Cold Spring, through November 8. Those trains do not reopen Breakneck station.

A Saturday at a big pick-your-own

Fishkill Farms says the donut line runs long on weekend afternoons in late September and October. The harvest-festival weekends still ahead on their own page are October 24, October 25, October 31, and November 1, with courtyard bands those afternoons.

Instead. The same farm says the store, the Treasury Cider Bar, the grill, and the courtyard music do not need a picking reservation. That weekday store visit is the swap they print. Bad Seed, in Highland, is a family-farm cidery with weekend taproom hours and no table reservations. It is not a festival orchard.

Timing. Fishkill’s own line for the donut window is earlier, on a weekday, or outside that late-September and October peak. A picking reservation is still required for the rows and the corn maze. The price of the reservation itself is not printed on the festival page.

Headless Horseman on a Friday or Saturday in October

Their tickets page says Friday and Saturday evenings in October are extremely busy, and to expect extended waits. It tells you to buy dates early in the season, or Sunday evenings, if you want a shorter line.

Instead. The Scream Pass is their front-of-line add-on. Online it is an extra $41 a ticket. It can also be bought that night at the Midway, after you have a ticket. One ticket still covers the attractions. This is the busy version of a place we already list, not a quieter substitute.

Timing. The nights still printed for the higher October price, as of October 20, are October 23, 24, 25, 30, and 31. Arrive 30 minutes before the reservation. The night runs about 2 to 2.5 hours. A group rate for 15 or more is listed only for October 2, 9, 16, 18, and 30, so October 30 is the remaining group night. Children’s Days were October 3 and October 17.

Worth the drive

Every Hudson Valley place we have checked. Food, a farm, a church, or a hall shows up only when that listing has one. Lodging prices stay on the listing.

    • Farms. Fishkill Farms store
  11. Esopus Creek where it runs through Phoenicia, New York

    Phoenicia, New York

We left these off when a page did not give both a time and a price, or the word free: the Bethel Woods drive-through, Handel’s Messiah on December 19, and the Millbrook salon on November 6. Tree lightings that showed up only in a news story stayed off too.
