Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour
Best season Spring and early autumn. August is when the blue trail is a queue, and the ridge is still exposed. Check the park the week you go. Sections close.
The old ridge mule-track above the five villages, from Levanto toward Porto Venere. Side paths drop into a village. The famous walk on the water, the blue trail, is the one with the card and the queue. This is the other one, and it is not a subway ride from Milan.
Worth knowing
Do not walk all of it
The consortium says the full ridge is at least ten hours and tells you to split it, using the refreshment points along the way. Pick one stage. A side path is how you finish in a village. The pin on this page is Volastra, a hamlet on the ridge, not the only start.
Transit
Regional train to Levanto, Monterosso, or another village station, then up to the ridge. Genoa is the nearest large city, and it is still a train, not a city bus. This is the piece that does not match Dragon's Back's 'minutes from the metro.'
The card
The park FAQ says the Cinque Terre Card is required only to use the SVA coastal trail. Read parconazionale5terre.it before you go. One-way rules have been posted on busy days on that coastal path. The ridge is not a promise that every connector is open.
With kids. The consortium calls the high path accessible to someone reasonably fit, and the full line is a long day. It is not a buggy walk, and a village-to-village stage is still a hike. The flat coastal path is the crowded one, not the easy family substitute.
With a group. No group reservation was verified for the ridge. A large party should pick a stage, not the 40 km line, and should check that the connector down to the village is open.
The short version
The Cinque Terre tourist consortium describes path no. 1, the Sentiero Alto, as an old mule-track along the ridge between the coast and the hinterland, possibly Roman in origin. The full line inside and beyond the five villages runs more than 40 km, touches about 800 meters, and has about 1,300 meters of climbing. The national park's own FAQ says a Cinque Terre Card is required only for the SVA, the blue-green coastal trail. Other park trails are a separate question of whether that section is open.
