If you loved Dragon's Back

Reference: Dragon's Back, Hong Kong

A ridge you can start from a city and finish at a beach, a village, or a summit you walk back down. Dragon's Back is the bus from Shau Kei Wan that ends at Big Wave Bay. Beacon is the train from New York, and it ends at a fire tower, not a beach. Lion's Head and Baegundae are summit walks above Cape Town and Seoul. The Ligurian high path has the same shape, then drops to a village, but it is a train from Genoa, not a hike that starts in Milan. The paid blue trail between the five towns is the queue. It is not this row.

Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday

Best season A cooler, clear morning. Skip a typhoon signal and a midday summer ridge. Weekends are the busy version of a walk that magazines already called famous.

Section 8 of the Hong Kong Trail: a ridge above the south coast that starts at a bus stop and ends at Big Wave Bay beach. It is famous, and it is still the clearest version of a city ridge that finishes in the sand.

Worth knowing

  • Start

To Tei Wan on Shek O Road. From MTR Shau Kei Wan, the Hong Kong Tourism Board says Exit A2, then Citybus 9 from the bus terminus to the To Tei Wan stop. The same bus runs back from Big Wave Bay toward Shau Kei Wan. Check the Citybus board; the 9 has more than one variant.

  • How long

Both the LCSD hiking card and the government's Round-the-Island Trail page say about 8.5 km. They do not agree on time: about 4.5 hours on the LCSD card, about 2 hours 45 minutes on the Round-the-Island page. Plan the longer one if anyone is slow. The LCSD calls the paths rugged.

  • The finish

Stay on Section 8 through Pottinger Gap and come down to Big Wave Bay. That is the beach ending. Shek O village is a different stop on the same bus route, not the end of this walk.

With kids. The LCSD calls the paths rugged and steep on both sides of the ridge. It is not a stroller walk, and it is a poor first hike for a small child.

With a group. No group permit showed up on the route card. The ridge is narrow and well known. A weekday morning is the calmer time for a party.

The short version

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department describes Dragon's Back as the undulating ridge between Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak, and calls Section 8 the last and steepest section of the Hong Kong Trail. Shek O Peak is 284 meters. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department route card starts at To Tei Wan on Shek O Road and finishes at Big Wave Bay, about 8.5 km.

  • Central Farmers' Market

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden says local organic, chemical-free greens, sold by the farmers, plus earth-friendly products and local handicraft.

Season. Their page says every Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Star Ferry Central Pier No. 7.

This is in Central, not at Big Wave Bay. They say the market has run since 2007 as a stall for local organic farms.

Best season Clear weekdays. Summer weekends and October foliage fill the lot. Scenic Hudson lists the park as free, dawn to dusk, year-round.

Drive About 1 hr 20–1 hr 45 min

General guidance from Midtown by car when the roads are moving. Metro-North to Beacon station is the calmer arrival. Times vary.

Parking. Use the marked trailhead lot. It fills on fair weekends. Do not invent a spot on a side street and call it overflow.

A steep ridge walk above a small river city. The staircase follows the old incline railway. The fire tower is the longer version. The casino ruins are the shorter turnaround.

Worth knowing

  • How far

Scenic Hudson calls the trail steep, with switchbacks, starting on the old railway stairs. The overlook is the short day. The fire tower is an extra walk along the ridge. Turn around if the tower is more than you wanted.

  • After the ridge

Eat on Main Street once you are down. The summit is not a restaurant, and October weekends fill the trailhead lot.

The short version

The mountain was a signal point in the Revolutionary War, and the city below took its name from that beacon. In the early 20th century an incline railway, called one of the steepest passenger funiculars, carried people to a casino and hotel. The railway burned. Scenic Hudson now holds a park on the ridge. The fire tower, on state park land, was restored and reopened in 2013.

The city bowl, after

Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday

Best season A dry morning. The upper rock is a poor idea after rain. Full-moon nights are a SANParks warning, not a suggestion to go alone.

A short, popular summit above the city bowl, with the Atlantic on one side and Table Mountain on the other. You walk back to the same trailhead. Camps Bay is the beach you look at, not the place the path ends.

Worth knowing

  • Start

The usual trailhead is the parking area on Signal Hill Road, up from Kloof Nek. It fills early on weekends and on full-moon nights. This desk is not quoting a conservation fee. If a ranger post is collecting one, that day's notice wins.

  • The top

Guide write-ups do not agree on the distance. Treat it as a short half-day, not a number. The last stretch is a scramble with chains and ladders. Turn around if the rock is wet. Come back down the same mountain. There is no beach finish.

  • Full moon

SANParks says a full-moon hike should be done only in a group, led by someone with experience. That is the whole tip.

With kids. The upper section is a scramble. A child who cannot climb chains and ladders should stop before them. This is not a contour path with a pram.

With a group. The summit rocks bunch people up, and the full-moon tradition is explicitly a group-with-a-leader walk. A large casual party on a Saturday will spend the time in the queue for the chains.

The short version

SANParks describes Lion's Head as the peak to the right of Table Mountain when you face the mountain, a short hike with views of the Atlantic seaboard, the city, and the table. The park notes a full-moon walk to the top and says that should be done only in a group, with someone who has experience. Signal Hill, just north, is where the noon gun marks 12:00.

The hike does not end at the farm. The shop is the grocery stop once you are down. On December 6, 2025 their weekend market moved to the V&A Waterfront. That is the large market. The Upper Orange Street door is the farm.

Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday

Best season Clear weekdays in spring or autumn. The uphill gate closes earlier in winter. Ice on the granite is a reason to pick another day, not a reason to improvise.

The highest summit in Seoul, reached from a subway stop on the north side of the city. Granite, a rope section, and a view back over the apartments. You come down the way you went up, or out past a temple. It does not end at a beach.

Worth knowing

  • Start

Ui-Sinseol LRT to Bukhansan Ui, the last stop. Seoul's hiking page says Exit 2, about five minutes to the Seoul Hiking Tourism Center, which has posted hours of 9:00–18:00 and closure on Mondays, Seollal, and Chuseok. From there it is still a walk up the road to the Baegundae trailhead. A taxi to the visitor center is the shortcut the same page mentions.

  • The cutoff

KNPS lists the Baegundae support center to Baegundae as 04:00–16:00 in winter and 04:00–17:00 in summer. Its public tables do not label those seasons with the same months. Check knps.or.kr the morning you go. After the cutoff they are not letting people start up.

  • The rock

The Seoul hiking note for this peak says you hold a rope on the cliff between Baegunbongammun and the summit, and it asks for sturdy boots. That is the advanced walk. The same center also describes an easier valley path, Sogwicheon, which is not the summit.

With kids. The summit route is graded advanced and uses a rope on bare rock. It is not a family stroll. The gentler valley path is a different walk and does not deliver the peak.

With a group. No group booking was verified for a day hike. Weekend summits back up on the rope section. Split the party or go on a weekday and be down before the cutoff, not at it.

The short version

Baegundae is the main peak of Bukhansan. The Seoul tourism guide gives the summit as about 836.5 meters and calls the Ui approach the short, advanced route. The Korea National Park Service posts an entry-time rule for the section from the Baegundae trail support center to the summit. The mountain is inside the city, which is the point of the walk.

Food nearby

Eat before the gate, or after

The summit is not a restaurant. Doseonsa is a temple on one approach, not a dining booking.

Farms and stands nearby

  • Seoul Farmers' Market

The city says the market is a place to meet 40 or more farms. The farm list is on the market Instagram the city names. This page does not copy a farm.

Season. The city says weekends from April through November, skipping the hottest stretch, at Ttukseom Hangang Park, Yangcheon Paris Park, and Hwarangdae Railway Park in Nowon. A city notice posts a second-half weekend schedule and says the detailed schedule is on Instagram. It does not print opening hours.

Hwarangdae in Nowon is the north-side park, closer to Bukhansan than the river parks. Read the Instagram note the city points to before you treat a printed weekend as a specific park.

Terraced ridges above the Cinque Terre coast in Liguria

Sentiero Alto

ShareEmailPostFacebook
Food
The village you descend into

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Spring and early autumn. August is when the blue trail is a queue, and the ridge is still exposed. Check the park the week you go. Sections close.

The old ridge mule-track above the five villages, from Levanto toward Porto Venere. Side paths drop into a village. The famous walk on the water, the blue trail, is the one with the card and the queue. This is the other one, and it is not a subway ride from Milan.

Worth knowing

  • Do not walk all of it

The consortium says the full ridge is at least ten hours and tells you to split it, using the refreshment points along the way. Pick one stage. A side path is how you finish in a village. The pin on this page is Volastra, a hamlet on the ridge, not the only start.

  • Transit

Regional train to Levanto, Monterosso, or another village station, then up to the ridge. Genoa is the nearest large city, and it is still a train, not a city bus. This is the piece that does not match Dragon's Back's 'minutes from the metro.'

  • The card

The park FAQ says the Cinque Terre Card is required only to use the SVA coastal trail. Read parconazionale5terre.it before you go. One-way rules have been posted on busy days on that coastal path. The ridge is not a promise that every connector is open.

With kids. The consortium calls the high path accessible to someone reasonably fit, and the full line is a long day. It is not a buggy walk, and a village-to-village stage is still a hike. The flat coastal path is the crowded one, not the easy family substitute.

With a group. No group reservation was verified for the ridge. A large party should pick a stage, not the 40 km line, and should check that the connector down to the village is open.

The short version

The Cinque Terre tourist consortium describes path no. 1, the Sentiero Alto, as an old mule-track along the ridge between the coast and the hinterland, possibly Roman in origin. The full line inside and beyond the five villages runs more than 40 km, touches about 800 meters, and has about 1,300 meters of climbing. The national park's own FAQ says a Cinque Terre Card is required only for the SVA, the blue-green coastal trail. Other park trails are a separate question of whether that section is open.
