Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Morning, year-round. Late afternoon in summer the lane becomes an approach to the viewpoint. Be gone by then, or be willing to share it.

Costa do Castelo is the lane under the castle walls, with residents’ doors and a thinner crowd than the terrace above. The castle ticket is the beaten path. This is the shadow of the wall. Walk it and do not turn every stair into a viewpoint.

The short version

The street follows the old castle slope, part of the Moorish and medieval circuit that became a neighborhood. People live on it. The terrace above sells the view. The lane sells nothing, which is why it belongs on a gem list that is willing to drop places.

An early grill, uphill

Alfama’s famous grills are on the tourist loop now. Eat earlier, higher, in a small room where the grill is the menu. If someone is recruiting you from the door, you have gone one street too low.
