Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season April–June and September–October. Midday in August is hot and the lanes are tight. Morning is kinder.

Mouraria in daylight is a parish of lanes, workshops, and lunch. At night the fado rooms do their work. Come before that, when the street is errands and the grill is for people who live upstairs.

The short version

After Afonso Henriques took Lisbon in 1147, the Moorish population was pushed into this parish. The name is the displacement. Centuries later, fado grew here around singers like Maria Severa, on streets such as Rua do Capelão. The lanes hold both facts.

Food nearby

Cantinho do Aziz

A Mozambican room the neighborhood has loved for years. Eat there, or at a grill with one board and no English lesson. Skip a fado dinner package at noon. The music can wait until you have actually seen the street.

A game nearby

Neighborhood roller hockey

Roller hockey, hoquei em patins, is Lisbon’s everyday spectator sport. A neighborhood pavilion beats a packaged visit to Benfica or Sporting. Ask at a café if a game is on.
