Matsuo Taisha
- Food
- A small lunch in the shrine’s neighborhood
Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger
Best season Year-round, morning. New Year draws a crowd, as it should. Every other week is easy.
Matsuo Taisha is one of the older shrines in the city, associated with sake brewing and a spring brewers still care about. It sits west, under the hills, and it does not have a tunnel of gates. The water is the point.
The short version
The shrine’s founding traditions reach back before the Heian capital, and its link to brewing is why sake makers still visit. A garden by Shigemori Mirei sits on the grounds. You can come for the water and the quiet hall without joining a photography route.
Food nearby
A small lunch in the shrine’s neighborhood
Eat simply nearby, or carry a bento to the hills above if you continue walking. Do not fold this into an Arashiyama buffet. The brewery blessing is not a flight menu.
