Best season Weekday mornings, April–June and October–November. If you arrive with a full bus, walk past the gate and out the far lane until the group is inside.

Ohara is a temple village in the north, with Sanzen-in and a walk among fields. Come at opening. By late morning the bus from Kyoto Station has arrived, and the village briefly becomes a queue with thatched roofs.

The short version

Sanzen-in is an old Tendai temple in a village that stayed rural while Kyoto paved the basin. The lanes and the Otonashi waterfall are the walk around the ticket. You are half an hour from the famous gates and in a different kind of day.

Food nearby

Shojin ryori or noodles in the village

A temple meal or a simple noodle lunch is part of the outing and priced that way. Eat it, then leave before the bus loop reverses. Do not add a themed café because the roof is thatched.
