Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Morning year-round. Cherry week on the banks is a party. Come the week after if you wanted the rivers more than the blankets.

Demachiyanagi is where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet, a student edge of the city. Morning on the bank is joggers, bicycles, and a confluence. There is no gate. That is why it belongs here.

The short version

The rivers shaped the capital’s north end, and the delta became a place of bridges, students, and small shops. It is not an ancient monument with a pamphlet. It is the city’s ordinary beautiful infrastructure. Sit on the bank and watch the water join.

Food nearby

Demachi Futaba

The mame mochi shop is the correct sweet, and the queue is short and local. For a meal, soba or a student set lunch nearby. Nishiki Market is the tourist grocery. This is the other errand.

A game nearby

University clubs along the river

Students row, run, and play on and beside the water. A university fixture is the sporting option. You are in the right part of town for it.
