Old Faithful

Old Faithful, Yellowstone · 44.460° N, 110.828° W

The geyser is real and the boardwalk is a waiting room. Yellowstone and the Tetons have valleys where the animals keep the schedule, not an eruption clock.

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season May–June and September, at dawn. Winter is a different trip, with different road closures. Check the park roads before you leave town.

Lamar Valley is a wide road through the park’s northeast, and the reason to be there is animals at dawn. Bison, sometimes wolves, often nothing but grass and a cold car. The valley does not perform at noon.

The short version

This valley sits in the story of the 1995 wolf reintroduction. It was also long used as range for bison. Arrive before sunrise and accept that the animals owe you nothing. The boardwalk clock of Old Faithful does not apply here.

Pack food, or eat in Cooke City

There is no restaurant worth planning inside the valley. Eat in Cooke City or carry food from Gardiner. A lodge cafeteria is fuel, not a meal to remember.

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season July and August, when the pass is reliably open. Early June and late September depend on snow. Always check.

US 212 between Red Lodge and Cooke City climbs into alpine switchbacks and comes back down toward Yellowstone’s northeast gate. It is a road, not a visitor center. Pull over, look, and do not treat a viewpoint like a mall.

The short version

The highway is a 1930s scenic approach to the park, later named an All-American Road. It closes with snow. Check the road before you promise anyone a photo. Weather up there is not a suggestion.

Breakfast in Red Lodge

Eat in Red Lodge before you climb. A diner coffee and something hot. Do not plan a picnic that depends on a viewpoint kiosk being open.

High-school sports in Red Lodge

Red Lodge is a small town. A Friday-night high-school game is the local calendar. That fits this desk better than a drive to a pro arena.

Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday

Best season June and September, at dawn. July sunrise still draws tripods. If the lot is a workshop, leave and come back another morning.

Schwabacher Landing is a turnout on the Snake with beaver ponds and the Teton range standing up without foothills. Photographers know it at sunrise. It is still nothing like Old Faithful’s bleachers if you go early on a weekday.

The short version

The name comes from an early landing on the river. The view is the Teton fault’s work: the range rose, the valley dropped, and there are no gentle foothills to soften it. You are early, or you are standing in someone else’s frame.

Food nearby

Dornan’s in Moose, or groceries

Dornan’s is the practical bite on the Moose side. Jackson’s town square is the trap, with the cowboy restaurants. Buy food before you need it. The landing has no kitchen.
