A simple meal in town, or a picnic

Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season June and September. July and August are the full town. May and October can be beautiful and half-closed. Check what is open.

Waterton is where the prairie hits the Rockies in one abrupt step. The town is small, the lake is long, and Glacier National Park is across the border. In shoulder season it can feel nearly private. That is the trip.

The short version

Waterton-Glacier was dedicated in 1932 as the first international peace park. The Prince of Wales Hotel is the silhouette on the hill. The 2017 Kenow wildfire burned much of the park; town and trails have been growing back. You are in a peace park and a fire recovery. Both are visible.

Food nearby

A simple meal in town, or a picnic

The town is small and should not pretend to be a food city. Eat simply or picnic on the lake. If the only open room is a gift shop, you brought the wrong appetite. Bring snacks.
