Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season May–September. Morning light makes the compound walls readable. Midday is just bright.

Pikillacta is a Wari city, older than the Inca, laid out in straight compounds. It is often nearly empty. You walk grid streets that do not look like the postcard, which is why it works.

The short version

The Wari state built this planned city around the 7th to 10th centuries, long before the Inca took the valley. The walls are high, the blocks are regular, and the silence is the lesson. You are not in an Inca souvenir. You are in the earlier highland plan.

Eat in Cusco, not at the gate

Bring water. Save the meal for a picantería in Cusco, the kind with one stew and a crowded local room. The road stalls are for the bus, not for you.
