Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season June and September. August is a beach town doing beach-town things. Come earlier in the day.

Palinuro is a cape south of the Amalfi circus, with caves, a beach, and evenings that still empty out. It is not undiscovered. It is simply not performing. The Cilento is the point of coming this far.

The short version

The town takes its name from Palinurus, Aeneas’s helmsman in the Aeneid, lost overboard. Up the coast, Velia is a Greek site without Pompeii’s queue. The Cilento was a quiet edge of the Kingdom of Naples. The cape is the story. The swim is the rest.

Grilled fish above the marina

Eat grilled fish and mozzarella di bufala in the lanes above the marina, not at the lido with the speaker. Ask what was landed. Leave if the answer is a shrug toward a freezer.

A game nearby

Summer games on the beach pitches

The sporting life here is a local tournament on the sand, not a Serie A weekend. Watch if one is posted. Otherwise swim.
