Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season April–June and September. The dolphin dawn is busiest when the south is busiest. You do not have to join it.

Lovina is the north coast, black sand and a slower clock than Seminyak. The dawn dolphin boats can turn into their own little queue. Skip that scrum. Take the afternoon, the shore, and a meal that is not a beach club.

The short version

The north coast looks toward the old capital. Singaraja was the Dutch seat in Bali, and the north still feels like a different island from the south. Lovina grew as a modest resort strip and, blessedly, stayed modest.

Seafood in Kalibukbuk

Eat seafood in town, or babi guling at a local stand if you eat pork and it was cooked that morning. Ask. A buffet with a dolphin mural is the thing to leave.
